TITLE CHIVERS WOODEN CRATE
DESCRIPTION A simple and useful wooden crate, but with a story to tell. The crate is marked Chivers Farms and Steven Chivers started farming in Cambridgeshire around 1850 and using his own produced moved quickly into jam making. The factories were self sufficient with their farms supplying all of their fruit. There is a photo on their website with these crates holding glass jars that were then filled with jam by hand. The photo is dated 1894. The farms and factories were sold to Schweppes in 1959.
