This is an important set of Victorian scales produced by Avery. They are stamped V.R. and the number 480, indicating that they were used and tested by Weights and Measures in the County of Gloucestershire. The cast iron retains its original paint and decoration as well as the original cooper rectangular pan. They were most probably used in a Victorian ironmongers for weighing dry goods (like nails). With the scale I obtained a lovely long run of cast iron ring weights marked GPO and bearing an arrow. They are perhaps slightly later than the scales but this is the style of weigh that would have been used.
